Read the "Nuts and Bolts" post first
1. What would you say is Paul's overall tone in this chapter?
2. Paul gives a brief autobiography of his life. Why do you think he takes the time to do this?
3. In verses 16b-22 Paul expounds upon the fact that he was not known for several years by any church leaders. Why does he do that?
4. Can you sum up the chapter in a few phrases?
When you respond to something please put the question number by it so we know what in the world you are talking about.
For any who want, suggested extra reading would be:
Acts 8
Acts 9
Acts 26
Phil 3
2 Kings 2
Here is an encyclopedia article TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT whatever that means, basically I have not checked it extremely thoroughly so it may have some wiggidy wack stuff on it. http://bibleencyclopedia.net/index.php/Epistle_Of_Paul_To_The_Galatians

2. I think paul is trying to show them that the things that he is telling them are not made up by man, but by God (vs 10-12)
ReplyDeleteYeah I think you are on the right trail. The specific thing would be the message of the Gosple. Those verses 10-12 shine a light on my life. When I am in a situation where I could stand up for Christ in the work place I have a lot of temptation to not say what I should so as to please man. I am not talking about telling non-christians they should not swear or whatever, I mean holding back the message of the Gosple when I could be telling it. Pretty lame but I bet it happens to everyone.
ReplyDelete1. I would say that Paul's overall tone is one of surprise, maybe even urgency. I mean he comes right out and says that he's "astonished" that the Galatians were deserting Christ and turning to a different gospel.
ReplyDeletenot exactally what I was thinking but I think you are right as well John.
ReplyDelete4. Galations 1- Paul greets the church in Galatia, expresses his astonishment at their desertion of Christ, in the same section curses those who proclaim a gospel contrary to that which Paul had origionally preached, and he gives his testimony to the church of Galatia.

ReplyDelete1. I was not thinking about suprised when I first looked through this but I think you bring up a good point John I mean it is right there so i guess i should have seen it but I didn't. I think I would say Suprised indignation.
ReplyDelete2. Going off of what Joe said, I think that Paul is trying to impress on the Galatians that nobody taught him the gospel, but he recieved it from the Holy Spirit through,in Paul's words, "....a revelation of Jesus Christ."
ReplyDelete3. I don't know why he does that, but I wonder if maybe Paul's ministry would have been hampered had he gone back to Jerusalem imediately following his conversion. Then again this could be just a hairbrained idea. What if?
ReplyDeleteWhere is everyone? Thanks for being here Joe and Jon. Any ideas on getting the other guys in here? I was going to put up a new chapter but I dont want everyone to be way behind with it if they are going to join up. On the other hand I dont want us to get bogged down with this. Let me know what you think.
ReplyDelete3. I think the point Paul is making may be this:
ReplyDeleteThe gospel message he proclaimed was from God. It was not from the other Apostles since he didn't have contact with them. It is an evidence of the accuracy of and purity of the Gospel.
Well I hope that my being here helps to solidify all our beliefs in some way shape or form. With regard to the others getting involved I don't know. I don't think that Andrew and Amy have the internet so that could be his reason.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone alive out there?
