1. Martin Luther said something to the effect that if the idea of justification by faith is lost then all Christian Doctrine is lost. Agree? Disagree? Why?
2.Here's a toughy: What do verses 17-18 mean in the context?
3. If the law could not save anybody then what in the world was if for? Just to make life less fun for the Jews? To cut down on the population of unblemished livestock? Whaddaya think?
4. I would say that verse 20 is stunningly beautiful but also in a way very painful and hard to apply. How does this verse make you feel or think?

1. I think that ML is mostly right if we do not have faith based salvation we don't have anything
ReplyDelete2. ???
ReplyDelete3. I believe the purpose of the law was to set the jews apart from the other nations mostly
sorry guys, I haven't been very active in checking the status of the blog. so needless to say i'm a little behind. I'm gonna do the reading and i'll get back with ya'll.
ReplyDeletedo it to it John. I will leave it up a bit longer and we can all weigh in a little more. I think i will try to write a post about question 3 later on it deserves some more attention and I have been reading a book which had a very good explanation about this very thing.
ReplyDeleteWe gotta get some more guys in here. We should make a last ditch effort for the Bros but then maybe think about getting some non-realated persons in this thing
ReplyDelete1. I would agree because our whole "religion", that's not the right word but you get my point, is built on Eph. 2:8-9. I guess I would say that those two verses sum up what ML. is saying about the justification through faith which kind of stems naturally from "For you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,(v9) not a result of works so that no one may boast."
ReplyDelete2. In the ESV the heading over vs. 15-21 is "Justified by Faith". I think what vs. 17&18 mean in context is that basically no one can work there way to heaven. There is no way any human can have a right relationship with God apart from accepting Christ as their Savior, which I think we all agree on. So that being said, in 17 I think that Paul is making the case that since Christ was sinless, and we as humans strive to be justified in Christ, Chist DID NOT struggle with sin. How could He? He was fully God yet fully man. God CANNOT sin, if he could everything we believe falls apart.
ReplyDelete2.cont.. I think that vs.18 is Paul's way of putting the whole Jewish belief system in a metaphor. Basiscally saying that we can't work our way into Heaven.
ReplyDeletesorry for taking so long guys. i've had quite a bite on my plate trying to get everything squared away for the spring semester.
ReplyDelete3. I think that in addition to setting the Jews apart, I believe that God used the Law to kinda reveal mankind's sin condition to the Isrealites. Also I believe that He wanted to use this realization to bring them into a relationship with Himself.
